Advertisements promoting diamond earrings priced as low as $9.95 often tempt the unwary consumer. The diamond is claimed to weigh 0.25 points. Following simple arithmetic, since there are 100 points to a carat, what is being offered are actually stones weighing 1/4th of one point, which is 1/400 of one carat and consequently worth about $2. The bottom line is, it is possible to get both expensive and inexpensive diamonds, but they are all precious and hardly cheap.
Most often, earrings made out of cheap diamonds are marketed by jewelers claiming to buy the diamonds directly from the cutter, by passing the middlemen.
Cheap diamond earrings do not always refer to the massive discount afforded by wholesale jewelers.
In 2001, Gemesis, a company founded by General Carter Clarke, initiated the mass-production of synthetic diamonds. The diamond industry, headed by the De Beers company, fought against this move, asserting them unfit to be regarded in the same league as the natural diamonds. Since diamond detecting machinery could gauge the difference, the synthetic diamonds were priced 3% lower than the naturals. However, the real savings are in the colored synthetic diamonds, which typically cost about 75% - 80% less than what a natural colored diamond would cost.
Many laboratories are also committed to creating imitation diamonds that look almost real.
Cubic zirconia jewelry was highly popular in the 1980s. At $5 a carat, it was highly affordable and a cheap substitute. However, it loses luster over time. It is not scratch-proof and can easily be differentiated from the natural stone. Contrary to this, Moisannite, an astounding fake, is almost as hard as diamond and even more brilliant.
It costs about $600 a carat, ten times less than a natural diamond. A trained gemologist, however, can easily distinguish this from a real diamond.
Looking for diamond earrings at affordable prices, the general emphasis is on the awareness of cut, color, clarity and carats, but the importance of purchasing from an accredited, reputable institution cannot be understated. .
Diamond Solitaire Engagement Rings
So, you're ready to pop the question? Getting engaged is a once in a life time occasion and you want everything to be perfect. The right atmosphere, romantic setting and of course the perfect ring are essential. The ring has to be special enough to sweep her off the feet, the same way you did while courting her. Nothing will impress her more than buying her a magnificent, dazzling diamond solitaire ring.
Engagement rings account for almost thirty percent of diamond jewelry sales. Out of these, the most popular is the classic solitaire ring.
A solitaire diamond ring is a ring having a single diamond rather than a cluster of diamonds or side stones. Solitaire rings showcase the diamond's beauty. The band of a solitaire ring is generally made of platinum, a shining white metal that compliments the stone perfectly. The setting, which holds the stone securely, comes in a four prong and six-prong variety. The setting with four prongs shows off the diamond, while the six...

Diamond Ring Settings ? Display your Diamond with Style
There are almost as many ways to set a diamond as there are diamonds themselves, and diamond ring settings can influence the appearance and character of your ring as much as the diamond itself. From simple, unadorned mountings to settings richly set with diamonds, the ring setting you select can support your diamond with understated elegance or with exuberant flair. Good diamond ring settings show off your diamond.Certain diamond ring stores will have a wider variety of diamond ring settings than others, so whether you are buying a ring off the shelf or having one custom made just for you, ask to browse the store's ring catalog before you select the right jeweller for you. Simple settings, like the prong setting, are more commonly available, so be prepared to do a little extra legwork if you are looking for a jeweller that sells diamond rings with more usual settings. The prong setting is most commonly used for solitaire rings, and can set a single stone off perfectly.

Who Else Got a Bad Diamond Deal? Here's How YOU Prevent It
Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Well, they're also a jewelers best friend, because these little stones are the most valuable minerals in the world. Valuable, yet everyone has trouble when buying a diamond because it's so hard to get a good estimate of what a fair price would be. If that's you, then I'm here to tell you that judging the value of a diamond is actually as easy as looking for 4 easy characteristics. They are cut (the shape of your diamond), clarity (the amount of spots, cracks and flaws), color (is your diamond completely clear or does it have a deep color?) and carat, the measure of weight for diamonds.
So the first one is cut. Is your diamond round and equally wide as it is tall? That's called a round and brilliant cut, and it's the most valuable cut there is. When your diamond is either flatter or taller in shape, it becomes less valuable. This goes for every diamond there is, except for a triangular cut, which can also be very valuable because it is in fact...

Loose Diamonds
If you're shopping around for a loose diamond at a nearby jewelry store or online diamond dealer, ask your dealer for a 10X loupe with which you can closely examine the interior of the diamond. And, if you intend buying loose diamonds privately, it would be better if you bought a 10X eye loupe directly from a jewelry house. In fact, the best eye loupe you can buy is the Hastings 10X Triplet eye loupe from Bausch & Lomb. The best way to check a diamond for clarity is with a stereoscopic binocular microscope which comes with dark field illumination.
As you perhaps know, all loose diamonds are given a clarity grade below a power of 10X.
When you examine a loose diamond with the help of a loupe, bring it all the way up to your eye and then very gradually pick up the diamond with tweezers to a point just below the loupe so that you see it clearly at close range. Pick up the diamond with the help of tweezers by placing the diamond table down. Now, set the diamond...
